Irvington Historic District
Step off the porch and you're already there. Irvington is one of Portland's grandest streetcar-era neighborhoods — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — with Craftsman, Tudor, and Colonial homes lining quiet streets under century-old trees. Take your coffee for a slow morning walk; the neighborhood does the rest.

NE Broadway & Alberta Arts
Portland's neighborhood side. NE Broadway's cafés, bakeries, and independent shops start a few blocks from the front door, and the Alberta Arts District — murals, galleries, and some of the city's best casual dining — is a short drive north. Go hungry, wander freely, come back for a nap.

Lan Su Chinese Garden
A Ming-dynasty-style walled garden in Old Town, built by artisans from Portland's sister city of Suzhou. Covered walkways wind past still water and carved stone to a teahouse in the pavilion — order a pot and watch the koi. It covers a single city block, and somehow the city disappears entirely.

Portland Japanese Garden
Twelve acres in the hills above Washington Park, often called the most authentic Japanese garden outside Japan. Wander the strolling pond, sand-and-stone, and tea gardens, then catch the view toward Mount Hood on a clear day. The International Rose Test Garden — more than six hundred varieties — sits just below.

Powell's City of Books
The world's largest independent bookstore fills an entire city block with more than a million new and used volumes, shelved side by side in color-coded rooms. Give it an afternoon — or at least a rainy hour. The Rare Book Room upstairs is worth the climb on its own.

Forest Park
More than five thousand acres of Douglas fir and fern rising above the city — one of the largest urban forests in the country. Eighty miles of trails begin minutes from downtown, including the thirty-mile Wildwood Trail. Pick a quiet stretch and walk until the city sounds fall away.

The Grotto
A 62-acre shrine and botanical garden set against a basalt cliff, just minutes from the house. The upper gardens — reached by a cliffside elevator — hold some of the quietest corners in Portland, with paths that ask nothing of you but to keep walking slowly. You don't need to be religious to feel what the stillness is doing.

Downtown & the Pearl
When you're ready for a little more: the Portland Art Museum, Pearl District galleries and boutiques, and the riverfront path through Tom McCall Waterfront Park. On weekends, the Portland Saturday Market fills the seawall with local makers. Cross a bridge or two — it's the Portland thing to do.

Mount Tabor Park
An extinct volcanic cinder cone rising right out of the city's east side — one of the few anywhere inside a city's limits. Wooded trails loop past century-old reservoirs to a summit with sweeping views over downtown Portland. Go at golden hour and watch the city soften.

Multnomah Falls
Oregon's tallest waterfall pours six hundred twenty feet down a mossy basalt cliff in two tiers, with the 1914 Benson Bridge suspended between them. It's a straight shot east through the Columbia River Gorge — go early on a weekday, when the mist still has the canyon to itself. The paved path up to the bridge takes ten minutes; the roar and the cool air will ask you to stay much longer.
